It's been <i>so long</i> since I've posted and I'm saying <i>so long</i> too! Does "so long" mean goodbye in other parts of the world? It does here! I really enjoyed blogging about the great art kids were doing here on the Central Coast, but I became a bit distracted with my own three bundles of joy and also I started painting regularly myself. This has become my main creative outlet and I'm really enjoying it. I've included some of my paintings below to give anyone interested an idea of what I'm chasing... If you like what you see and you don't mind <a href="https://www.instagram.com/_joe.hall_/" target="_blank">Instagram</a>, you can always see more <a href="https://www.instagram.com/_joe.hall_/" target="_blank">@_joe.hall_ </a>I will keep checking in here with the art teaching blogosphere to keep inspired for my days at school, I'm always so impressed with both the teaching and what kids are capable of. All the best - Joe : )</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I still remember a large mural my own class made with this technique when I was around this age - approximately 30 years ago now! : o </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was super exciting for me and I'm pretty sure these students were equally as excited. I think our class made stars and planets back then, but this lesson was inspired by a Mambo t-shirt of mine featuring some kind of electric guitar playing, rock 'n' roll alien. It was descending from a flying saucer with the caption "Planet Rock!" So I showed this year one class my much loved and well worn shirt and we also looked at some other UFO illustrations.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We spent a full lesson with each student covering their paper in flouro oil pastels - just scribbling thickly everywhere with no deliberate structure. Then they completely painted over this twice with black acrylic paint. Once these were dry everyone was armed with a toothpick and then scratch drew their own UFO scene. It's worth noting the friendly looking aliens they have imagined : )</div>

Year 1 made these colourful hexaptychs for the Umina Beach Art Show we held in late August. And yes "hexaptych" is a thing (six panels) – just don't ask me how to pronounce it! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Each student painted directly onto a piece of board and then scratch-drew their plant inspired image into the wet paint using the wooden tip of their paintbrush. Next the paper was carefully laid onto the paint, lightly smoothed and then peeled off to reveal their monoprint. The process was repeated a number of times and their 6 best prints were chosen for display at the art show. In the past I've done a similar lesson with kindergarten where we made fingerpainted prints, you can see it <a href="http://artwithmrhall.blogspot.com.au/2012/07/finger-paint-printmaking.html" target="_blank">here</a>.</div>

If you're in the area this weekend (Aug 27 & 28), pop in to see and even buy some great art by the students of Umina Beach Primary School and many local artists. All money raised will help purchase more art resources and materials for the school. Open Saturday and Sunday 10am -3pm.</div>

A favourite year 5 class made these striking masks around 2 years ago, I'm more than a little late posting – and yes, I did just say favourite! ; )</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We began with pencil, then used permanent markers and finished with some water colours. The masks are inspired by a Hallmark greeting card illustrator named <a href="http://www.thinkmakeshareblog.com/sketching-masks-marcos-roman/#more-1455" target="_blank">Marcos Roman</a>. I know this because I pretty much verbatim, used Don's excellent lesson on his always inspiring blog <a href="http://www.shinebritezamorano.com/2014/10/making-masks-with-marcos.html" target="_blank">Shine Brite Zamorano</a>.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Year one made these vertical landscapes in three steps. Initially I led a guided drawing lesson in pencil. Next, the students traced their "good" lines with black markers and did a little erasing. Finally they coloured them any way they chose with watercolour paint.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We had just completed a science unit of work about landscapes, and it seemed only appropriate to attempt this classic art form. I took inspiration from one of Kathy Barbro's many fine lessons on <a href="http://artprojectsforkids.org/" target="_blank">Art Projects For Kids</a>. For any eagle eyes out there, please ignore the missing comma on the class display text!</div>

Newspaper sculptures courtesy of year 5 in the final week of school last year. Inspired by my previous <a href="http://artwithmrhall.blogspot.com.au/2014/08/geometric-sculpture.html" target="_blank">Geometric Sculpture</a> post. I might have art directed the bottom left one a little more than the others... They all looked great and were a really effective collaborative task.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Year 5 sketched their “manly” men (beards, goatees, moustaches etc!) in lead pencil and then charcoal. We used watercolour paint to add the “pop” by finishing with a single-colour background and another t-shirt colour. The effect is reminiscent of one of Warhol’s Marilyn prints, but obviously a lot more manly : ) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I really like these, and they looked pretty rad on the back wall. You can see my previous <a href="http://artwithmrhall.blogspot.com.au/2014/08/manly-men.html" target="_blank">Manly Men post courtesy of Year 1 here</a> (sans the pop background).</div>

Reimagining the original. Year 1 drew their vertical and horizontal (ish) lines freehand with black oil pastels, and then used watercolour paints to fill the resulting spaces with any three colours plus white. I've tried this lesson previously with year 5, except they used rulers. You can see <a href="http://artwithmrhall.blogspot.com.au/2013/02/recoloured-mondrians.html" target="_blank">their versions here</a>.</div>

<br />
In a dimly lit classroom, year 5 created these light paintings in small groups while I took long exposure photographs. The brightly coloured lights are a combination of small torches and mobile phones with coloured cellophane attached. I've tried this lesson once previously, you can read a little more about the process and <a href="http://artwithmrhall.blogspot.com.au/2013/02/time-lapse-light-art.html" target="_blank">see the results here</a>.<br />
<br />
Since undertaking this lesson I've come across a 1949 collaboration between Gjon Mili and Pablo Picasso using this same technique. One of their resulting photographs is at the bottom of the post. This and some other photos from the same series ran in LIFE magazine in 1949 and then also featured in a show at New York's Museum of Modern Art in 1950.<br />

Year 5 made these Ming Vase arrangements by closely following Miriam Paternoster's fantastic art lesson <a href="http://arteascuola.com/2013/01/the-ming-vases/" target="_blank">found here</a> – I had been waiting for ages to try this project with a class! The only change worth mentioning is that I gave the students a variety of vase outlines to trace instead of drawing their own. This saved some time as it's a relatively time consuming, but engrossing project : )</div>

Year 1 were very proud of their drummers, and rightly so! We began with a guided drawing lesson in lead pencil, traced the lines in oil pastel and then painted. We also retraced the black outlines after painting. My guided drawing was inspired by some CD cover art by Paula Cox, you can view it <a href="http://artwithmrhall.blogspot.com.au/2012/09/musical-vibes-ii.html" target="_blank">here on a previous post</a>.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I ran this lesson with year 3 and 4 students, they were in the middle of an Australian theme —including a focus on Aboriginal Australia (I was lucky enough to be with the class on an excursion featuring a guided and very inspirational tour through the bush, where we were taught about the many types of bush tucker and medicine surrounding us). Another focus was Australia’s natural and man-made landmarks, so this art lesson was a way of bringing these two aspects together. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First, we talked about things that were widely recognised as being Australian cultural icons. Together we made a list (some will be obvious to readers far from Australia, and others may not), which I trimmed down to those that could be easily drawn and identified in a simple silhouette. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We also spent some time appreciating the work of Indigenous artist <a href="http://bronwynbancroft.com/" target="_blank">Bronwyn Bancroft</a>. Looking at her children’s book <a href="http://bronwynbancroft.com/projects/why-i-love-australia/" target="_blank">Why I Love Australia</a>, we especially noted the bright and often non-traditional colours she uses. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvH_tYxVmTh90LlURbpnLOdY19i5L1UeP6CC_izJHoy7Wp1YqySPVD7M1FAk42m2jpsMBVfD0s7acS4Kah2VFjC_3Iwd7xQgEKSRljANAuCgSJwnjWyAUPdX8Dbfw5pnhAldknPRpSymQ/s1600/AustralianIconsB.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvH_tYxVmTh90LlURbpnLOdY19i5L1UeP6CC_izJHoy7Wp1YqySPVD7M1FAk42m2jpsMBVfD0s7acS4Kah2VFjC_3Iwd7xQgEKSRljANAuCgSJwnjWyAUPdX8Dbfw5pnhAldknPRpSymQ/s1600/AustralianIconsB.jpg" height="233" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Then, the children chose their icon and drew it with lead pencil. Next, they painted it and the background in a different single colour. The children then used cotton buds to finish their icons with repeated dot patterns as used by many Aboriginal artists, but also using bright colours inspired by Bronywn’s art. It was quite a process from start to finish, but the children did a great job and the results are stunning.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The most popular icon turned out to be Ned Kelly, as inspired by <a href="http://nga.gov.au/Nolan/Index.cfm" target="_blank">Sidney Nolan’s famous paintings of him</a>. For those further afield, Ned is our most infamous bushranger. Probably his most lasting legacy is the home-made helmet and armour that he sported, although as it transpired, without much success. He’s a controversial figure in our history — loved and loathed in equal measure. He was convicted of three murders, and hung in 1880 at the ripe old age of 25. Our other, less controversial icons featured here include an emu, a kangaroo, the Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Uluru and the Three Sisters. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
As well as enjoying the fine efforts of these students, I hope I may have captured the imagination of any of you viewing from abroad, and you're planning a trip here soon!</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7uMY3eVEElwIzyfBBJ2k0IRgAUX44ApKhL74C6XJkKV5DfQG1J138BQfrKG6yekpeKtvS1FGXXLhyphenhyphen8UBnQFZlthJr-LoEStcwhBVHQ9PLaALeaPg01u0Nr9qxPbv-0aQV-nW3qvI_R2A/s1600/Coloured50-50A.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7uMY3eVEElwIzyfBBJ2k0IRgAUX44ApKhL74C6XJkKV5DfQG1J138BQfrKG6yekpeKtvS1FGXXLhyphenhyphen8UBnQFZlthJr-LoEStcwhBVHQ9PLaALeaPg01u0Nr9qxPbv-0aQV-nW3qvI_R2A/s1600/Coloured50-50A.jpg" height="280" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These 50/50 silhouettes from year 5 are more graphic than fine art. I think a lot of graphic art often appears deceptively simple. I showed these students the same lesson as undertaken by a previous class who I first tried this lesson with (<a href="http://artwithmrhall.blogspot.com.au/2012/08/5050-silhouettes.html" target="_blank">it's over here</a>). Quite a few of these students took direct inspiration from my previous class, while others found their own ideas.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We drew in pencil and then painted all the black parts in acrylic. Once dry, I decided to add a step this time and paint the white/negative space a single colour of their choosing. We used watercolour paint for that final step – much quicker to work with and far easier to clean up : )</div>

<br />
The internet's a big place. There's a lot to see and be inspired by (and a lot to run away from shielding your eyes!). Blogs specifically about art and education are no different, there is so much out there and so little time.<br />
<br />
I imagine at least some of you are like me and keep returning to the same sources for inspiration, but sometimes I find it's good to find a fresh perspective. Below are five blogs that inspire me from around the world. There are a bunch more that inspire me, but keeping both our attention spans in mind... five is plenty for now! : )<br />
<br />
I would love to hear about any art blogs you highly recommend - please comment away and share your personal favourites. Without further ado, and in no particular order, here are five really good art blogs:<br />
<br />
<b><a href="http://gretchenbuwalda.blogspot.com.au/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #cc0000; font-size: large;">Gretchen's Art Blog</span></a></b> - Hailing from Wellington in New Zealand, Gretchen is prolific. Her lessons utilise a large variety of media and there is so much to soak in. See for yourself!<br />
<br />
<b><a href="http://gabriela-outsidethelines.blogspot.com.au/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #38761d; font-size: large;">Creativity First</span></a> </b>- Gabriela's blog title perfectly surmises the strong philosophy that underpins her art lessons. Creativity is a precious commodity and too-often undervalued. Get a direct injection now!<br />
<br />
<b><a href="http://zamoranoarts.blogspot.com.au/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #0b5394; font-size: large;">Shine Brite Zamorano</span></a> </b>- Don highlights a lot of contemporary artists and succinctly teaches the real nuts and bolts of making art. I think I learn something new every time I visit his blog. Do yourself a favour!<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><a href="http://afaithfulattempt.blogspot.com.au/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #f1c232;">A Faithful Attempt</span></a></b> </span>- "Miss" is another very experienced art teacher who also uses a lot of different media. The lessons are diverse and very clearly explained. Teach one this week!<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://arteascuola.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #351c75;">Artescuola</span></a> </span></b>- Representing Europe and more specifically Italy, is Miriam and her <i>eccellente</i> blog! Featuring beautifully presented art from her middle school students, it's a feast of visual inspiration. Treat yourself!Joehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17812460494491197820noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7726523201556365182.post-8093064014283955932014-11-01T21:45:00.000+11:002014-11-01T21:45:34.355+11:00Fantastic Fauvist Foxes<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<i>"Fantastic Fauvist Foxes"</i> says it all really... This 3/4 composite class were mid way through Roald Dahl's classic Fantastic Mr Fox. We began by following a guided drawing lesson from <a href="http://artprojectsforkids.org/portfolio/fox/" target="_blank">Kathy at Art Projects For Kids</a>. After starting in pencil we then traced in permanent marker. Taking inspiration from the bold and non realistic colours of Fauvism, students completed their foxes with water-colour paints.</div>

<br />
Australian Playground is a compilation album from the Putumayo Kids record label. It features Loose Change, a song I wrote and recorded way back when. It was well before I was a parent, when there seemed to be many more hours in the day! The song celebrates being a kid and the small but important, and very memorable ways we occupy ourselves in those special years : )<br />
<br />
A percentage of sales goes to the <a href="http://acmf.com.au/" target="_blank">Australian Children's Music Foundation</a>. So if some diverse Aussie children songs sounds like your thing, the physical album's available from <a href="http://www.putumayo.com/australian-playground" target="_blank">Putumayo</a> (depending where abouts you are in the world), otherwise it's on <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/putumayo-kids-australian-playground/id873346483?ign-mpt=uo%3D4" target="_blank">iTunes as a download</a>, and it's probably at good record stores too — remember those places?!Joehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17812460494491197820noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7726523201556365182.post-16755671656422355322014-10-06T22:23:00.000+11:002014-10-06T22:23:05.626+11:00Serape Fiesta<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Preparation for this lesson is nice and easy with the only requirements being coloured pencils and regular A4 paper. These colourful designs inspired by Mexican serapes were created by a composite year 2 and 3 class. Each pattern begins from a line of symmetry in the centre. To read more about serapes pop over to my <a href="http://artwithmrhall.blogspot.com.au/2013/02/speedy-serapes.html" target="_blank">previous year 5 and 6 post.</a></div>

The HMS Endeavour was sailed to Australia by Captain James Cook and his crew well over 200 years ago now. The ship and the intercontinental mode of transport in general were featured in these year 4 students’ studies. Together we embarked on the challenge of sketching this tall ship. I initially lead a guided drawing lesson which the students then completed themselves and later embellished with some simple watercolour ocean and sky.</div>

Year 1 made these wavy Mondrian-inspired abstractions with black oil pastels and watercolour paints. It's a straightforward lesson but the students enjoyed it, which has to remain a priority — not a lot of learning happens when there's no joy! I've previously tried more regular, <a href="http://artwithmrhall.blogspot.com.au/2012/12/mondrian-compositions-with-yr-2.html" target="_blank">ruled Mondrians with year 2</a> and <a href="http://artwithmrhall.blogspot.com.au/2013/02/recoloured-mondrians.html" target="_blank">recoloured Mondrians with Year 5</a>.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This isn't exactly an 'art' post... it's more the genesis of an idea inspired by an exercise I did with a year 6 maths class. We were working on 3D shapes, and made these suspended sculptures using rolled up sheets of newspaper and masking tape. If time and chance allow, this idea could be extended to become an art lesson in itself—I'll let you know if I find the opportunity! But for the moment, here are some 'accidental' art pieces—rectangular, hexagonal and triangular pyramids.</div>

Men with facial hair, as illustrated by year one students with charcoal. Some of the technical terms in this very cultured art lesson included beard, goatee and moustache.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is the first time I can recall ever using or having students use charcoal... Gasps of shock horror from the real art teachers out there - <i>Who is this impostor?!</i> I'm just a regular classroom teacher who likes making art in class, keen but naive : ) So any sagely words of wisdom, must dos and don'ts or other secret tips that you know about using charcoal please let me know in the comments below!</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9x34IVdjB4VpjY1cJJtqGmq8m0Q1HIsQ9K1d8tnfxtIhl0CGhM86RS3rC7CoZatvZqmlgm2QsP2FRaThquoy4-Mkq4YYQcHWUwAjJa6cdXxe0t3fbimAfX4x-gkqteXDpTjQ8ZCNxzv8/s1600/SymmetrySilhouetesA.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9x34IVdjB4VpjY1cJJtqGmq8m0Q1HIsQ9K1d8tnfxtIhl0CGhM86RS3rC7CoZatvZqmlgm2QsP2FRaThquoy4-Mkq4YYQcHWUwAjJa6cdXxe0t3fbimAfX4x-gkqteXDpTjQ8ZCNxzv8/s1600/SymmetrySilhouetesA.jpg" height="267" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Year 4 were working on these stylised trees for a short time at the end of each maths class. Unfortunately only a few were completed in the time I was with them — I hope to see more of them fully realised when I get a chance to visit their class again.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Using grid paper printed from <a href="http://incompetech.com/graphpaper/" target="_blank">this very handy site</a>, I asked the students to make a stylised but symmetrical tree. Working from the bottom and centre, they began by drawing in pencil, then traced this with black markers before finishing with brightly coloured backgrounds of their choosing. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Most students only seem to enjoy this type of detailed art for a short time, so just doing a little bit each day seemed to work well. As you can see, some of the trees are very stylised — I'm not sure how many were secretly drawing something else... but at least they were busy! </div>
